Research

My research was on binary neutron-star mergers: numerical-relativity simulations of the merger and the matter it throws out, and the electromagnetic signals that follow, from kilonovae to the radio and X-ray afterglows of gamma-ray bursts.

Schematic afterglow light curveOn logarithmic axes, the flux rises roughly as t to the power 0.8, peaks about 130 days after the merger, then falls roughly as t to the power minus 2.2.110100100010⁻³10⁻²10⁻¹1peak ≈ 130 drelative fluxdays after the merger
Fig. 1 A schematic gamma-ray-burst afterglow seen off-axis: the slow rise and fall that followed the neutron-star merger GW170817 for months. Computing signals like this one, from the physics of the shock up to the light that reaches us, is what PyBlastAfterglow does.
